And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  (Mark 1:16-18).

Jesus makes the discipleship training official; He says “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men”. Notice the call of Jesus is not complicated, it is really simple. The phrase “fishers of men” becomes another name for evangelism. When you fish, you have to go after the fish. You will not catch any if you lay in bed. In fact, it generally means you get up early. And fish are squirmy and slippery, so care has to be taken or they will get away from you. Fishing may involve getting a little wet. All of these ideas are metaphors for the work of evangelism. That is proclaiming the good news, the message of Christ: God has provided a way of salvation for all men through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.

It is the “fishers of men” which has become the mission of the church. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the symbol used for the church and followers of Christ is the fish.
