Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. (Matthew 12:38-39)

Notice Jesus says “evil and adulterous generation”? Most likely He was referring to spiritual adultery. Throughout the Bible, the use of the word adultery more often represents idolatry or" backsliding" of a people married to God. The marriage relationship involving both a legal agreement and a commitment of love is a fitting example of Christ and His Church.

Since God can be trusted to be consistently faithful, we as a reflection of His character likewise are to be steadfast in our faithfulness. That means we cannot be too friendly with the world's ideas and practices.

As James says in his epistle: “friendship with the world is enmity with God”.
